Made to Order vs Made to Measure: Which Tweed Suit Is Right for You?

Both services begin with the same idea: a tweed suit made specifically for your order. The difference is how we establish the fit. Made to order uses separate standard jacket and trouser or skirt sizes; made to measure uses the measurements you provide. This guide will help you choose without making the process more complicated than it needs to be.

Choose made to order if separate standard sizes usually work for you

A made-to-order suit is a strong choice when you are comfortable buying jackets and trousers or skirts in standard UK sizes. You select the jacket and waistcoat size separately from the trouser or skirt size, so you do not need to fit a rigid matching set.

Men can choose Slim or Regular fit. Women’s Made to Order uses one standard tailored fit, with top and bottom sizes chosen separately. Both have the practical length options shown on the product page. The single-breasted notch-lapel jacket, matching single-breasted waistcoat and trousers—or skirt on women’s styles—are then made for your order.

Made to order is likely to suit you when:

  • your usual jacket and trouser or skirt sizes are reliable;
  • you need different sizes on the top and bottom;
  • you prefer a simple ordering process with familiar size labels; or
  • for men, you want help choosing between Regular and Slim proportions.

Choose made to measure if body measurements will give a better starting point

Made to measure is designed around the measurements you submit rather than a standard jacket-and-bottom size combination. It can be particularly useful when standard suits are consistently too long, short, tight or loose in one area, or when your measurements sit between conventional sizes.

On each made-to-measure product page, you provide the required body measurements and can use the notes box to explain anything you think we should know. Before ordering, follow the men’s measurement guide or women’s measurement guide carefully and ask if any measurement is unclear.

Made to measure is likely to suit you when:

  • standard sizes rarely balance well across your body;
  • you know accurate body measurements;
  • you would like the order based on those measurements from the outset; or
  • you have a fit concern that is best explained in the order notes.

What both services include

Our suit listings are for three-piece tweed suits: jacket, waistcoat and trousers, with a trouser-or-skirt choice on the relevant women’s styles. The current options available for a particular fabric and service are always the ones shown on that product page.

Both services require time because the suit is begun for your order. Please check the production and delivery guidance beside the buying controls before committing to an event date.

Still unsure? Start with fit and fabric

If the fabric is the main uncertainty, you can ask about a sample before ordering. If fit is the concern, tell us your usual sizes, the area that normally causes difficulty and the suit you are considering. We can then help you decide which service is the more sensible route.

Ask about fabric samples or sizing help.
